Heparinized blood (GRN) may be used for cell counts, but not for differential.
Citrate (BLU) samples may be used for platelet counts and WBC counts (multiply PLT and WBC by 1.11).


Specimen Stability
CBC/Hemogram, differential specimens are stable at room temperature for 24 hours.
Hemogram specimens are stable refrigerated up to 72 hours.

Clinical Significance
 
The complete blood count (CBC) is often used as a broad screening test to determine an individual's general health status. It can be used to:
  • Screen for a wide range of conditions and diseases
  • Help diagnose various conditions, such as anemia, infection, inflammation, bleeding disorders, leukemias, and lymphomas.
  • Monitor the condition and/or effectiveness of treatment after a diagnosis is established
  • Monitor treatment that is known to affect blood cells, such as chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
