Clinical Significance
The finding of an increase of eosinophils in nasal secretion is one of the most helpful tools in the diagnosis of an allergy. An eosinophil count in a nasal smear of 20-25% indicates that the patient is allergic. During infectious colds the neutrophils predominate and the eosinophils may disappear completely in the acute stage.
The blood differential count does not show any constant relationship to the nasal differential count.
