Clinical Significance

Lupus anticoagulants are immunoglobulins that generally interfere with the Activated Partial Thromboplastin time (APTT) Assay. The common association of LA with thrombocytopenia, recurrent spontaneous abortions, and idiopathic thromboembolic diseases underlines the importance of diagnostic tests capable of distinguishing these LA antibodies from anti-factor antibodies, factor deficiencies, and heparin effect, since all four conditions may cause a prolongation of the APTT test.

The STAClot LA procedure is performed whenever the preliminary workup (APTT, PT, and LAC screen) is abnormal and mixing studies do not correct to normal.
