Preferred Specimen
2 Greiner Blue tops (BSP) [Greiner 2.0 mL partial fill special BLU 3.2% Sodium Citrate tube].
Instructions
- Sample must be collected to a Greiner 2.0 ml partial filled blue top tube containing 3.2% sodium citrate. The sample must be filed to the small black line.
- Obtain the sample after a discard tube of at least 2 ml. Do not draw a sample for Aspirin assay after a tube that contains EDTA (purple top).
- For collection a 21 gauge or larger needle must be used to avoid platelet activation.
- The collected sample must be inverted gently for at least 5 times.
- Samples should be collected between 2 to 30 hours after ingestion of aspirin.
- Sample must be incubated at room temperature for 30 minutes prior to testing and can be used up to 4 hours after collection. Do Not Refrigeration or freeze specimen.
- Samples must be delivered to the department in an upright position. NOTE: Do Not Send through the tube system and do not centrifuge
Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)

Reference Range
Therapeutic range: less than 550 ARU
Non-therapeutic range: greater than 549 ARU
The results are reported in Aspirin Reaction Units (ARU), which indicate the amount of thrombxane A2-mediated activation of glycoprotein IIb/IIa receptors involved in platelet aggregation. The lower value, the more inhibition is present, consistent with a reponse to aspirin.
Clinical Significance
