Instructions
DO NOT SPIN, Whole blood collected in 3.2% buffered sodium citrate (9:1 blood to sodium citrate).


Specimen Stability
Blue Vacutainer tubes sent to lab for testing-test within 6 hours of collection.


Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Reject hemolyzed, clotted, short draw (<90%), overfilled, or centrifuged samples.

Reference Range: 80-140 seconds, 
     Results >400 are reported as >400 seconds
     Results <60 are reported as <60 seconds

 


Clinical Significance
The ACT is a screening test that has been found to be sensitive to deficiencies of coagulation factors. It is useful as a routine pre-surgical screen test and for monitoring heparin therapy. The ACT is commonly used for heparin anticoagulation monitoring during cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) surgery, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA), interventional radiology, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), hemofiltration, hemodialysis and critical care.
