Instructions
Patient instructions for 24 hour collection
Stress to the patient that for accurate test results on a 24 hour urine sample it is important for a complete and accurate collection be made.
Instruct patient to drink the same amount of liquid during the collection period that they normally consume, unless otherwise instructed by their physician. No alcoholic beverages should be consumed at this time.

Instructions to patient:
- Select a convenient time for starting the collection. You must finish the collection at the same time 24 hours later.
- Empty your bladder and discard this urine. Note the date and time you did this.
- From this time on, collect ALL urine you pass during the day and night for the duration of the 24 hour period. Pour this urine into the container provided by the Laboratory.
- Keep the urine refrigerated or on ice throughout the collection process.
- At exactly 24hours from the start of collection (see time documented in #2), empty you bladder. Note the date and time:
- After collection is complete, bring the urine and instruction sheet to the Laboratory as soon as possible.
Specimen Stability
Urine: Urine specimens should be kept at 2 - 8o C until they are analyzed. Urine specimens can be preserved by adjusting the pH to less than 4.0
