Clinical Significance
 Measurements of Uric Acid are used in the diagnosis and treatment of numerous renal and metabolic disorders, including renal failure, gout, leukemia, psoriasis, starvation or other wasting conditions, and of patients receiving cytotoxic drugs. Comparing synovial fluid to plasma results is also helpful in evaluating a possible diagnosis of gouty arthritis, although demonstration of crystals with features consistent with uric acid, is more definitive for that diagnosis than measurement of synovial fluid and blood uric acid levels.
