Specimen Stability
For serum samples:
  • Store samples tightly stoppered at room temperature (15 to 30°C) for no longer than 4 hours.
  • If the assay will not be completed within 4 hours, refrigerate samples at 2 to 8°C for no longer than 8 hours.
  • If the assay will not be completed within 8 hours, or for shipment of samples, freeze at -20°C or colder for no longer than 6 months.
  • Thaw samples no more than three times. Avoid assaying lipemic or hemolyzed samples.
For plasma (heparin and EDTA) samples:
  • Store samples tightly stoppered at room temperature (15 to 30°C) for no longer than 8 hours.
  • If the assay will not be completed within 8 hours, refrigerate samples at 2 to 8°C for no longer than 48 hours.
  • If the assay will not be completed within 48 hours, or for shipment of samples, freeze at -20°C or colder for no longer than 6 months.
  • Thaw samples no more than three times. Avoid assaying lipemic or hemolyzed samples.

Clinical Significance
Diagnose the cause of a low or high calcium level and to help distinguish between parathyroid-related and non-parathyroid-related causes.
Monitor the effectiveness of treatment when an individual has a parathyroid-related condition. PTH is routinely monitored for people with chronic kidney disease or who are on dialysis.
