Clinical Significance
Clinical Significance in Serum/Plasma: LDH is a non-specific test that may be used in the evaluation of a number of diseases and conditions. LDH is found in all cells of the body (as well as bacteria), with extremely high levels found in specific tissues such as the heart, liver, kidneys, skeletal muscle, and erythrocytes and is released from cells when they are damaged or destroyed. Therefore, increased levels seen in serum can be directly related to the damage of one of these tissues. Tissue levels of LDH are 500-fold higher than whole blood levels. Such measurements are used in the diagnosis and treatment of myocardial infarction, pulmonary emboli, liver disease, pernicious and megaloblastic anemias, malignancies, and muscular dystrophy. The results also may be used to monitor cancer chemotherapy.
