Patient Preparation
To minimize possible lipemia, an 8 to 10 hour fast is recommended, but not required.
Fasting Serum specimen, free from hemolysis, is the recommended specimen.

Specimen Stability
Serum specimens are stable for up to 7 days when stored at 2 - 8°C and 2 months when stored at <-20°C.

Clinical Significance
Haptoglobin is an acute phase reactant that is ordered to help diagnose and manage hemolytic anemia. Signs and symptoms may include fatigue, weakness, pallor, fainting, shortness of breath, rapid heart rate, jaundice, or red/brown urine. Other testing such as bilirubin, RBC count, reticulocyte count, and LDH may also be ordered to aid in diagnosis.
