Clinical Significance

Comparing synovial fluid to plasma results is also helpful in evaluating a possible diagnosis of gouty arthritis, although demonstration of crystals with features consistent with uric acid, is more definitive for that diagnosis than measurement of synovial fluid and blood uric acid levels.
