Specimen Stability
Uric Acid in synovial fluids is stable for 3 - 5 days when stored at 2 - 8o C and for 6 months when stored at < -20o C.
Methodology
Beckman AU
Setup Schedule
24x7
Reference Range
Synovial Fluid: Female: 2.6-6.0 mg/dL
Male: 3.5-7.2 mg/dL
(No reference ranges established for other fluid sources)
Male: 3.5-7.2 mg/dL
(No reference ranges established for other fluid sources)
Clinical Significance
Comparing synovial fluid to plasma results is also helpful in evaluating a possible diagnosis of gouty arthritis, although demonstration of crystals with features consistent with uric acid, is more definitive for that diagnosis than measurement of synovial fluid and blood uric acid levels.
