Specimen Stability
It has been reported that exposure to direct sunlight can decrease bilirubin in samples by 50% wIthin one hour. When well protected from light, bilirubin in serum is stable for 3 days when stored at 2 - 80 C, or 3 months when stored at < -200 C.

Clinical Significance
Bilirubin is measured to diagnose and/or monitor liver diseases such as cirrhosis, hepatitis, or gallstones. 
In newborns, bilirubin is measured to monitor jaundice and hemolytic disease of the newborn.
