Clinical Significance
The direct antiglobulin test (DAT) is used to demonstrate the presence or absence of immunoglobulin on the surface of red blood cells. Cells that have globulin adsorbed to their surfaces are said to be sensitized. The sensitizing globulin may be gamma globulin (antibody) and/or beta globulin (components of complement). The direct antiglobulin test shows whether or not red blood cells have become sensitized in vivo.
