HEPATITIS B SURFACE ANTIBODY

Test Code
HEPBSAB

CPT Codes
86706

Preferred Specimen
Gold top tube

Specimen Stability
8 hours room temp, 3 days refrigerated

Limitations
This test does not differentiate between a vaccine-induced immune response or an infection induced response, a total anti HBc may be of help distinguishing.
Individuals receiving blood products in the last 3-6 months may be falsely reactive due to the passive transfer of anti HBs.
A positive anti-HBs does not exclude co-infection by another hepatitis virus.

Clinical Significance
In vitro diagnostic immunoassay for the qualitative and quantitative determination of total antibodies to hepatitis B surface antigen in human serum used as an aid in the determination of susceptibility to hepatitis B virus infection in individuals prior to or following HBV vaccination, to determine disease progression, or where vaccination status is unknown.  An increase in anti HBs levels together with a loss of detectable surface antigen denotes convalescence in infection.
