Clinical Significance
In vitro diagnostic immunoassay for the qualitative determination of antibodies to Treponema pallidum in human serum used as an aid in diagnosing syphilis.  The spirochete T. pallidum causes syphilis and has never been cultured in artificial media.  This antigen based treponemal test detects specific treponemal antibodies and has higher sensitivity and specificity than nontreponemal tests which detect antibodies formed by the host in reponse to lipid material released by damaged cells or to lipoprotein-like material released from the spirochete.
