GLYCOSYLATED HEMOGLOBIN

Test Code
GHYB

CPT Codes
83036

Includes
Glycosylated Hemoglobin A1c, calculated glucose for A1c

Preferred Specimen
LAVENDER TOP TUBE

Specimen Stability
24 hours room temp, 14 days refridgerated

Limitations
In patients with hemolytic anemia, decreased values may occur.  Fetal hemoglobin >15% interferes with this method.

Clinical Significance
Glycohemoglobin is a term for hemoglobin-glucose complexes formed when glucose binds to the alpha and beta chains of hemoglobin.  The most prevalent complex is Hemoglobin A1c where hemglobin is bound to the N-terminal of the beta chain.  Hemoglobin A1c does not fluctuate significantly with different plasma glucose levels making it a good indication of blood glucose levels over the life of the red blood cell, 2-3 months.
