Clinical Significance
Test for the quantitative determination of fibrinogen is human plasma.  Fibrinogen is a glycoprotein that helps in the formation of blood clots.  Levels can be decreased in disorders affecting the synthesis or excess consumption of fibrinogen such as hypofibrinogenemia, dysfibrinogenemia, liver disease, hemolytic anemia, leukemia, DIC.  High levels can be seen during pregnancy, in woman taking oral contraceptives, rheumatoid arthritis, hepatitis, neoplasms, following surgery, burns, and tissue damage.
