Performing Laboratory
In vitro diagnostic test for the quantitative determination of uric acid in human plasma . Uric acid is the final breakdown product of purine metabolism in humans. Hyperuricemia may be due to high dietary purine intake, reduced excretion by the kidneys, certain drugs interfering with renal clearance, a consequence of diabetes, or gout. Hyperuricemia may lead to excess uric acid precipitation in joints, capillaries, skin, and other tissues. Uric acid levels causing gout may vary widely between individuals. Low uric acid levels may be due to decreased dietary purine intake, zinc, iron, or molybdate deficiencies, or numerous other causes.
