Preferred Specimen

Clinical Significance
Test for the presence of and percent quantification eosinophils in urine sediment.  Acute interstitial nephritis and occasionally chronic urinary tract infections present with eosinophiluria.  Untreated interstitial nephritis can lead to permanent renal damage.  In cases of acute allograft rejection, the presence of large numbers of eosinophils is a poor prognostic indicator.  Eosinophiluria can also be seen with rapidly progressinve glomerulonephritis, acute prostatitis, and acute cystitis.
