THROMBIN CLOTTING TIME
Test CodeTT
Preferred Specimen
LIGHT BLUE
Minimum Volume
Tube must be full
Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Gross hemolysis, short draw tubes, clotted speciman. Ulttracentrifuge grossly lipemic samples.
Limitations
Anticoagulant therapy from unfractionated heparin, Hirudin, direct thrombin inhibitors, fibrinolytic therapy, and antifactor Xa inhibitor may prolong results.
Clinical Significance
Thrombin time assay designed to be performed for the detection of heparin. TT can also be used to detect the presence of FDP (fibrin/fibrinogen degradation products). hereditary or acquired qualitative and quantitative fibrinogen abnormalities and increased fibrinolysis.
