Clinical Significance
In vitro diagnostic test for the quantitative measurement of theophyline in human plasma used in the diagnosis and treatment of theophyline overdose, and in therapeutic drug monitoring.  The biological half life of theophyline ranges from about 3.5 hours in young children to about 8-9 hours in adults.  It is substantially prolonged in the presence of liver disease and/or cardiac decompensation.
