Clinical Significance
In vitro diagnostic test for the quantitative measurement of transferrin in human plasma used for aiding in the diagnosis of malnutrition, acute inflammation, infection, and iron deficiency anemia.  Tranferrin transports iron in the blood to depots in the liver, spleen and bone marrow.  Its synthesis in the liver is influenced by iron metabolism;  iron deficiency results in a rise in synthesis thus increasing tranferrin levels while the opposite is true with iron overload, therefore transferrin determination is useful for diagnosing latent and manifest iron deficiency and overload.  Tranferrin is a negative acute phase reactant, thus levels are decreased during inflammatory and malignant disease.
