Clinical Significance
Post vasectomy semen analysis is a much less involved procedure when compared with the infertility analysis. The only concern in these cases is the presence or absence of spermatozoa. The length of time for complete sterilization to occur can vary greatly among patients and depends on both time and number of ejaculations. Therefore, it is not uncommon to find viable sperm in a post vasectomy patient, and care should be taken not to overlook even a single sperm. Specimens may be routinely tested at monthly intervals beginning at 2 months post vasectomy and continuing until 2 consecutive monthly specimens show no spermatozoa.
