Limitations
False negatives can occur with hemoglobin levels less than 5g/dl. Low levels of hemoglobin S are frequently observed in infants less than 6 months in age, testing after 6 months is recommended. False positive results can occur with hemoglobin C Harlem and Georgetown, and other rare variants.
Clinical Significance
Test which differentiates hemoglobin S from most other types of hemoglobin.
