Limitations
Up to 25% of elevated prolactin results may be due to alternate forms of prolactin having little or no biological activity (macroprolactin).  These can be multimers or IgG-prolactin complexes.


Clinical Significance
In vitro diagnostice test for the quantitative measurement of prolactin in human plasma used in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the anterior pituitary gland, which secretes prolactin, or of the hypothalamus portion of the brain.
