Clinical Significance
In vitro diagnostic test for the quantitative determination of progesterone in human plasma used in the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the ovaries and placenta.  Progesterone is a steroid hormone synthesized from cholesterol in the ovary and placenta of women, and in small amounts in the adrenal cortex in both sexes.  Progesterone and estradiol prepare the uterine lining for egg implantation and maintaining a fetus through pregnancy.  Progesteerone levels are used to detect luteal phase defects leading to infertility and early loss of pregnancy.  Decreased levels are seen in ovarian hypofunction.
