Clinical Significance
Test measuring the number of platelets per microliter of whole blood. Platelets are cytoplasmic cell fragments derived from megakaryocytes of the bone marrow which aid in hemostasis. Low levels may be due to disorders causing decreased platelet production such as leukemia or other anemias, viral infections, chemotherapy drugs, or heavy alcohol consumption, increased breakdown of platelets such as pregnancy, autoimmune dieases, bacteremia, TTP, hemolytic uremic syndrome, or certain medications, or splenic disorders.
