Clinical Significance
Qualitative test for the presence of myoglobin in urine.  Myoglobin is the heme protein of striated muscle which serves as an oxygen facilitator within muscle.  Myoglobin is released into circulation with any condition causing stress or injury to muscle tissue such as trauma, vascular disorders, muscle wasting disease, burns, etc. and is readily filtered through the glomerulus and excreted in the urine.  This test distinguishes between myoglobinuria and hemoglobinuria.
