Limitations
Some segments of the population do not produce detectable heterophile antibodies.  Some individuals maintain detectable heterophile antibody levels for months.


Clinical Significance
Differential test for the serological detection of IgM class heterophile antobodies associated with Infectious Mononucleosis.  Heterophile antobodies of IM may be present as early as the fourth dau and usually by the twenty-first day of illness.
