Clinical Significance
Methemoblobin is hemoglobin in which the iron in the heme group is in the ferric state (Fe3+) which cannot bind oxygen. A trace amount is normally found in human serum; elevated levels are seen in a variety of inborn errors of metabolism, and exposure to various environmental and pharmaceutical compounds.
