LUTEINIZING HORMONE  Serum/Plasma

Test Code
LH

CPT Codes
83002

Preferred Specimen
Light Green (Lithium) Gel or Gold Top Tube

Specimen Stability
3 days

Limitations
Samples obtained from the same patient at different times of the day can vary widely due to normal pulses of LH secretion, serial pooling of results may help overcome variability.

Clinical Significance
In vitro diagnostic test for the quantitative measurement of lutenizing hormone in human plasma, used in the diagnosis and treatment of gonadal dysfunction.  Elevated LH levels may indicate primary ovarian or testicular failure.  In females menopause and polycystic ocary disease can also cause elevated levels.  Low LH levels may indicate either pituitary deficiency or suppression of hypergonadism in either sex.  LH and LH/FSH ratios are useful in diagnosing and treating infertile women.  A rise in LH at menstual midcycle predicts ovulation within about 24 hours.
