Patient must not flex hand prior to collection. Collect specimen without a tourniquet.
Specimen should be collected in a Dark Green (no gel) Na Heparin tube. Place specimen on ice.

Clinical Significance
Lactic acidosis occurs in two clinical settings -- (1) type A (hypoxic), associated with decreased tissue oxigenation such as shock, hypovolemia (diminished blood volume, left ventricular failure; and B (metabolic), associated with diseases such as diabetes mellitus, neoplasia, liver disease, drugs/toxins, and inborn errors of metabolism.
