Clinical Significance
Measurement of B-hydroxybutyrate in human plasma.  BHBT is a ketoacid that nornally accounts for 75% of the ketones bodies in circulating plasma.  During periods of ketosis, BHBT increases even more than double the other two ketoacids and has been shown to be a better index of ketoacidosis including the detection of subclinical ketosis.  Ketosis can result from starvation, acute alcohol abuse, and diabetes mellitus.
