Clinical Significance
In vitro diagnostic test for the quantitative measurement of high density lipoprotein in human plasma used as an aid in the diagnosis of lipid disorders, various liver and renal diseases, and in the assessment of risk for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease.  The primary function of HDL is to transport cholesterol from peripheral tissues to the liver where it is metabolized.  This cardiovascular protective mechanism is why individuals with low HDL levels are generally considered to be at increased risk for coronary artery disease.
