Clinical Significance
In vitro diagnostic test for the quantitative measurement of folate in human serum.  Folate coenzymes are involved in the synthesis of DNA, RNA, and amino acids.  A folate deficiency may lead to a buildup of homocysteine which is associated with atherosclerotic vascular disease.  Macrocytosis is the major clinical manifestation of folate deficiency.
