Clinical Significance
D-Dimer assay is used for diagnosing thrombosis and monitoring thrombolytic therapy.  Elevated levels are found in deep vein throbosis, pulmonary embolism, and disseminated intravascular coagulation.  D-Dimer levels will decrease sharply after initiation of heparin therapy but will remain above the cutoff value until oral anticoagulant therapy is administered.  A negative D-Dimer determined on patients with a suspected thrombotic disorder has a high negative predictive value.
