CORTISOL  Serum

Test Code
CORT

CPT Codes
82533

Preferred Specimen
Gold Top Tube

Specimen Stability
2 days

Limitations
Circulating cortisol results from patients receiving Prednisolone or Prednisone therapy may be falsely elevated.  Heterophilic antibodies in human serum can react with reagent immunoglobulins with in vitro immunoassays.  Patients routinely exposed to animals or animal serum products can be prone to this interference and anomalous values may be observed.

Clinical Significance
Competitive immunoassay test for the quantitative determination of cortisol in human serum.  Cortisol is a steroid hormone synthesized in the adrenal gland which is released in response to stress and low blood-sugar concentration, which stimulates gluconeogenesis and activates antistress and anti-inflammatory pathways.
