Clinical Significance
Ionized calcium measurements are used to evaluate non-bound, physiologically active calcium. Increased levels are seen with hyperparathyroidism, ectopic parathyroid hormone producing neoplasms, excessive vitamin D, while low levels are seen in acute and chronic respiratory alkalosis, hyperventilation, critical illness in persons with renal failure, cardiac failure, post-surgery, and burns.
