Patient must come to Augusta Health Main Lab in Fishersville, VA for specimen collection.
Bleeding times are no longer performed on anyone <15 years of age. Devices used to perform the test for this age range are no longer being manufactured.

Instructions
A platelet count must be obtained within the past 24 hours before a bleeding time can be performed.
Patients should refrain from taking aspirin or drugs containing aspirin for one week prior to testing.

Limitations
A bleeding time may be prolonged due to the ingestion of anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, anticoagulants, or other drugs that may inhibit platelet function, or due to thrombocytopenia.
 


Clinical Significance
A bleeding time is the time in minutes for bleeding from a standardized skin wound to cease. It is used as a screening test for disorders of platelet function, Von Willebrand's disease, and vascular disorders.
