Clinical Significance
In vitro diagnostic test for the quantitative measurement of acetaminophen in human serum used in the diagnosis and treatment of acetaminophen overdose. Severe liver damage in adults is generally assocaited with ingestion of 15 grams or more. Catabolism of acetaminophen occurs in the liver and hepatoxicity will result in elevated plasma drug levels and a prolonged half-life. Acetaminophen does not have anti-inflammatory activity and it does not affect blood clotting. It is preferred over aspirin when the hemostatic side effects of aspirin must be avoided.
