Clinical Significance
Classifies an individual's ABO and Rh blood type, or blood group, based on the absence or presence of inherited antigens on the surface of RBC's.  For transfusion purposes, assuming the absence of unexpected recipient RBC antibodies, type O recipients are compatible with type O donor blood only, type A recipients are compatible with type A and O donor blood, type B recipients are compatible with type B and O donor blood, and type AB recipients are compatible with type A, B, AB, and O donor blood.
