Preferred Specimen
Prewarmed clot tube (do not use clot activator)


Patient Preparation
12-hour fasting required.

Minimum Volume

Instructions
Warm the tube before drawing the patient. Keep warm until centrifugation.
Note: Heel warmer can be used to prewarm tube before collection. After venipuncture, heel warmer can be used to maintain warmed sample until clotted and ready for centrifugation.  After centrifugation, aliquot serum into a transfer tube.  Serum can remain at room temperature once removed from the cells.

Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
The following will result in a specimen rejection:
  • Plasma samples
  • Serum seperator tube
  • Any tube with a clot activator
  • Grossly hemolyzed specimens
  • Grossly lipemic specimens
  • Improper storage temperature
