Clinical Significance
Sickle cell anemia is an inherited disorder that leads to the production of an abnormal hemoglobin called hemoglobin S (Hb S or Hgb S). Abnormal hemoglobin alters the shape of red cells which limits the ability of hemoglobin to transport oxygen to the tissues of the body. In addition, the red blood cell life span decreases from 120 days to about 10-20 days.
This test is used to aid in the diagnosis of Sickle Cell Disease or Sickle Cell Trait.
