Preferred Specimen
- Nasopharyngeal swab in viral transport media (UTM or M4)
- Throat swab in viral transport media (UTM or M4)
- Nasopharyngeal or bronchoalveolar wash/aspirate in sterile container
Unacceptable media: Abbott Multi-collect, Abbott Universal collect, eSwab, PrimeStore-MTM, Ruhof, MANTACC, media with guanidine-containing materials or ‘molecular media’ that indicates inactivation of pathogens and preservation of RNA/DNA.
Minimum Volume
- Minimum of 1 mL UTM or M4 transport media containing swab
- Minimum of 0.3 mL bronchial washing
Other Acceptable Specimens
None
Instructions
Swabs must be transported in viral transport media (UTM or M4)
Transport Temperature
Refrigerate
Specimen Stability
- Room temperature up to 48 hours
- Refrigerated up to 7 days
- Frozen up to 30 days
Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Improper transport media or container leakage.
Unacceptable media: Abbott Multi-collect, Abbott Universal collect, eSwab, PrimeStore-MTM, Ruhof, MANTACC, ARUP UTM, media with guanidine-containing materials or ‘molecular media’ that indicates inactivation of pathogens and preservation of RNA/DNA.
Methodology
Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
Setup Schedule
M, W, F (day shift only)
Report Available
Same day tested at the performing laboratory.
Reference Range
Not detected
Clinical Significance
Mycoplasma pneumonia causes upper respiratory infections, pharyngitis, and tracheobronchitis particularly in children. Real-Time PCR testing offers a sensitive option for the detection of Mycoplasma pneumoniae DNA from clinical specimens.
