Preferred Specimen
Sodium heparin is no longer an acceptable container type.
Bactec(R) Myco/F Lytic aerobic blood bottle is the only acceptable container type.
If positive for Mycobacterium, this test progresses to an identification and sensitivity on all isolates.
5 mL whole blood/bone marrow, inoculated into a Bactec(R) Myco/F Lytic aerobic blood bottle (1 mL minimum)

- Bactec(R) plus aerobic/f (silver label with gray-top) bottles
- Bactec(R) lytic/10 anaerobic/f (purple label and cap) bottles
- Bactec(R) peds bottle
