B-type Natriuretic Peptide
Test CodeBNP
Alias/See Also
BNP, BNEP, B-Natriuretic peptide, Pro BNP
Preferred Specimen
5.0 mL whole blood (1.0mL minimum). Plasma is acceptable
Transport Container
EDTA (lavender/purple top)
Specimen Stability
Room temperature: 4 hours, Refrigerated: 24 hours, Frozen: not applicable
Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Grossly hemolyzed specimens are unacceptable.
Limitations
The results of the test should be evaluated in the context of all the clinical and laboratory data available. If results do not agree with the clinical evaluation, additional tests should be performed. Some patients may have circulating BNP concentrations that are higher than the measurable range of the Test (>5000 pg/mL).
Reference Range
0-100 pg/mL
Clinical Significance
This assay is indicated for the measurement of plasma BNP as an aid in the diagnosis and assessment of the severity of heart failure. In patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS), this test, in conjunction with other known risk factors, can also be used to predict survival as well as to predict the likelihood of future heart failure.
