1.0 mL whole blood (0.5 mL minimum)

EDTA (lavender/purple top). Heparin (green top) is acceptable.

Room temperature: 1 day, Refrigerated: 45 days, Frozen: unacceptable
Reject Criteria (Eg, hemolysis? Lipemia? Thaw/Other?)
Clotted specimens are unacceptable.
Limitations
False positives may occur in patients with erythrocytosis, hyperglobulinemia, extreme leukocytosis, or hyperlipidemia.
False positive or false negative results may occur in patients with severe anemia (<15% hemoglobin) or patients with a recent blood transfusion.
False negatives may occur in infants under 6 months of age due to elevated levels of hemoglobin F.
