Clotted specimens are unacceptable.

Clinical Significance
ESR is a widely used, non-specific screening test. It is indicative of the presence of infectious, inflammatory, degenrative or neoplastic conditions. The increased rate of red cell determination is mainly associated with qualitative and quantitative changes in the plasma proteins.
