Instructions
Peak: Collect specimen two (2) hours after immediate release oral dose and four (4) hours after sustained release oral dose.
Trough: Collect specimen immediately before dose (within thirty [30] minutes).

PST (light green top). Red top and SST also acceptable

Room temperature: 8 hours, Refrigerated: 7 days, Frozen: 3 months
Limitations
A theophylline metabolite, 1,3-dimethyl uric acid, is usually undetectable in samples from patients receiving theophylline. However, it can reach detectable levels in uremic patients.
Reference Range
Therapeutic: 10.0 - 20.0 ug/mL
Clinical Significance
Theophylline levels are used in therapeutic drug monitoring and to diagnose and treat theophylline overdose. Theophylline is used in treating bronchial asthma and other pulmonary conditions.
