Instructions
Refrigerate during collection. Record duration of collection on requisition and container.

 
  1. Obtain a large specimen container from the laboratory.
  2. Inform the laboratory of the test being done so that the proper preservative, if any, can be added to the container.
  3. Label container with patient’s name (last & first), medical record number, date and time collection was begun.
  4. Place the properly labeled container in the specimen refrigerator.
  5. Have the patient void at 0600 and discard.
  6. Save all urine for the next 24 hours.
  7. Have the patient void at the end of the time period (0600 the next day for 24 hour specimens). Include this specimen with all others and send to the laboratory.
